Another week gone though this one started a bit differently. The lad and I entered our first mountain bike race Monday arvo, which was a blast. It was on a track we'd ridden a fair few times so we knew what it would be like. But the speed was something else. I really need to get fitter and faster..

I finished "Destiny's Road", by Larry Niven, a few days ago. It's an odd sort of book. I've read three of the Ringworld books, but nothing else by either Niven by himself or with other authors. I get the feeling he becomes wrapped up in world building, technology and biology, but at the expense of character development and motivation. The main character seems to be merely the vessel for the world, rather than any analysis of character or response. That's fine I guess, but the story starts off with the main character having a certain motivation and drive, which seems to peter out part way through and we are left with an examination of the world, along with a sudden revelation that really seems out of left field. Worth a read, but I think you'd have wanted to read a fair bit of Niven before getting into this one.

Today marks the last day of my holidays. As ever it is surprising just how fast the weeks have gone. It's also weird how little I feel I've accomplished each day despite going pretty solidly on the house since we got back from Toowoomba. The painting of the spare room is progressing nicely, lawns are down, general cleanup done. Yet it still feels like I've both got a tonne of things to do and have done nothing at the same time. Some reflection at the end of each day on what I have achieved had helped but I still feel there was more that I could have done.

I'm currently kicking back in the lounge with coffee and cricket on the box. Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday, though I've got plenty of other jobs to keep me on the go. I got some painting done before the start of play which sees the spare room ready for some final coats of paint. We still need to finalise the colours but we've got the first few ideas ready. We're going to add the first two and see how well it looks and what might go well with them.

On our last day here in QLD we went all out, heading to Milne Bay for swim in the morning then we had high tea at the Shingle Inn. We even dressed up for the occasion, as one must. The food and service was excellent and we would highly recommend anyone in Toowoomba to drop on and check them out.
Tomorrow we hit the road and head back home. I've got plenty of things to do, including painting the spare room but that will depend on people picking colours.
